Specification Solutions

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Green Building Rating System represents the U.S. Green Building Council’s effort to provide a national standard for what constitutes “green building.” This document is a tool for architects, specifiers, designers, building owners, or other professionals who want to know how Green Planet Paints™ can contribute to a building attaining LEED™ certification as a green building.

Because Green Planet Paints® are bio-based products, we can contribute to a total of 4 points. Conventional zero-VOC paints would offer only up to 3.

LEED Category:
Indoor Air Quality

Credit EQ 4.2:    Low emitting materials:  Paints and coatings
LEED Credit:    1 point (per credit)

Intent: Reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, potentially irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants.

Requirements:  VOC emissions from paints and coatings must not exceed the VOC and chemical component limits of Green Seal’s Standard GS-11 requirements.

Green Planet Value: Our paints are less than 1 g/l VOC’s, whereas the Green Seal requires only less than 50 g/l on interior paints.  We can provide laboratory testing to support this, which is sufficient for the requirement.  Green Seal does not differentiate us from any other low VOC paint.

LEED Category:
Materials & Resources

Credit MR 6:    Rapidly renewable materials
LEED Credit:    1 point (per credit)

Intent: Reduce the use and depletion of finite raw materials and long-cycle renewable materials by replacing then with rapidly renewable materials.

Requirements: Use rapidly renewable building materials and products (made from plants that are typically harvested within a ten-year cycle or shorter) for 2.5% of the total value of all building materials and products used in the project, based on cost.

Green Planet Value: Our paint is made from approximately 37% bio-based products, which include the soy resin, cellulose, along with soy- and seed-based additives.  Conventional paints on the market today use a petroleum-based acrylic as the resin.

LEED Category:
Materials & Resources

Credit MR 5.1:    20% manufactured regionally
Credit MR 5.2:    50% manufactured regionally
LEED Credit:    1 point (per credit)

Intent: Increase demand for building materials that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the regional economy and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

Requirements:  Use a minimum of 20%/50% of building materials and products that are manufactured regionally within a radius of 500 miles.

Green Planet Value: Our paints are currently produced in Phoenix, AZ.  If you are within 500 miles of these locations, these points are possible.
